The History of the N219: Designed as a Light Aircraft to Reach Remote Areas

BANDUNG, KOMPAS.com - The N219 aircraft, successfully developed by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) in collaboration with LAPAN (currently part of BRIN), is a significant symbol of the revival of Indonesia's aerospace industry.

Following the cessation of the N250 program in 1997-1998, the N219 was introduced as a light utility aircraft specifically designed to address Indonesia's geographical challenges as an archipelagic nation.

Not only a technological product, the N219 also represents the nation's independence in mastering the entire aircraft development cycle, from design and manufacturing to certification.

Background of the N219 Development

According to information obtained from PTDI, the N219 Program was initiated in 2007 as part of a national strategic agenda to develop a pioneering aircraft capable of reaching remote and outermost areas with limited infrastructure.

This development marked a significant momentum for the revival of Indonesia's aerospace industry after the N250.

Unlike previous programs, the N219 is an aircraft designed 100 percent by Indonesian engineers, marking a new milestone in the mastery of national aerospace technology. Strategically, the development of the N219 aircraft is aimed at supporting connectivity in the 3TP (Frontier, Outermost, Disadvantaged, and Border) regions and gradually increasing the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) in the highest-tech products in the aircraft industry. Currently, the TKDN in a single N219 unit has reached 44.69 percent.

The Historical Journey of the N219 Development

The N219 program began in 2007 with a focus on conceptual design, preliminary design, and detailed design to strengthen national engineering capabilities. Then, in 2014, the N219 program entered the manufacturing phase with the commencement of construction of the first prototype at the PTDI Bandung facility. This phase includes aircraft structural fabrication and system integration, including engine installation and avionics.

The completed N219 aircraft was then first introduced through a rollout in 2015, marking the initial readiness of the national design. Following this, ground tests, taxi tests, and preparation for flight tests were conducted. After a three-year process, the N219 made its maiden flight on August 16, 2017, in Bandung.

This first flight marked a significant milestone, marking the successful initial stage of aircraft system integration.

Aircraft Order

PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) received an order for N219 aircraft for commercial use from a domestic company, Mitra Aviasi Perkasa (MAP), which operates in aviation education and training in Indonesia. Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, Deputy Minister of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), who attended the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PTDI and MAP, stated that the signing marked a new milestone for the domestic aerospace industry.

"Today, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has signed a sales contract for the N219 to a private company for private commercial aviation," said Febrian at the PTDI hangar on Jalan Pajajaran, Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

PTDI President Director Gita Amperiawan explained that the scope of the contract includes the procurement of four N219 cargo aircraft and their equipment, including training and technical publications. The completion and delivery will be carried out in stages after the contract becomes effective.

Gita confirmed that this is the first N219 aircraft contract for the domestic commercial market. The four aircraft ordered by MAP are valued at US$36.1 million.

"This aircraft is designed for pioneering aviation, with the capability to operate on short runways of less than 1 km and unpaved runways," he said.
