Manpower Minister: Competency Certification Needs Recognition from Industry to International Level

TODAYNEWS.ID – Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Yassierli highlighted the importance of competency certification that goes beyond merely serving as proof of training, but is also recognized by industry up to the international level. According to him, certification must reflect competencies that are genuinely needed by the job market.

“We must avoid having certifications that are not recognized by the industry. Therefore, competency and its certification must gain recognition, even at the international level if possible,” said the Minister of Manpower while inaugurating the PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero) Training Center as part of PTDI's 50th Anniversary in Bandung, Saturday (29/8/2026).

According to the Minister, workforce competency requirements continue to shift alongside technological developments, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and the green transition. For this reason, competency development needs to be continuously adapted to technological advancements and industry demands so that workers remain relevant.

To address these challenges, the Minister asked companies to develop their training centers into Centers of Excellence in specific competency areas. Experiences, technology, and experts owned by the industry can serve as capital to build reference centers for competency development.

“If someone undergoes an internship at a company designated as a Center of Excellence, the expectation is that their competency will be recognized by other companies within the same industry. For example, PTDI becoming a Center of Excellence for the aerospace competency cluster,” he stated.

He added that internship programs should also be structured so they do not stop at work experience alone. The program must produce measurable competencies relevant to industry needs. Thus, companies are expected to strengthen their commitment to providing internship and training opportunities for a larger number of participants.

The benefits of industry-aligned training, the Minister continued, have been demonstrated by 60 young technicians who completed training at PTDI and were subsequently hired by aviation companies in South Korea. This shows that training aligned with industry demands can unlock employment opportunities in global markets.

The Minister of Manpower also urged companies to take on a larger role in preparing future skills through training and internships. Industry involvement is essential to ensure that worker competencies remain aligned with technological progress and workplace demands.

“Industry is not just a user of labor; it also shares the responsibility of preparing worker competencies to face future needs. We want companies to become increasingly active in preparing future skills,” he said.

The Minister expressed hope that the experience and expertise built over PTDI's 50-year history will continue to be expanded to prepare competent, adaptive Indonesian aerospace talent capable of competing globally.
